City committees plan open workshops this week

The citys Board of Adjustment and Planning Commission schedule public workshops this week. BOA meets at 5 p.m. today at City Hall, and the Planning Commission meets at 7 p.m. Thursday. Both sessions are open to the public. Fire officials begin budget workshops aiming for a July 1 deadline for the Destin Fire District. Assistant chief Hank Berry says weekly meetings will continue until a proposed budget is agreed. The district currently levies a percent mill ad valorem tax, with possible increases discussed in recent fire board meetings.

Rezoning Request Sparks Appeal Over Destin Property

Destin residents challenge a plan by Mattie M Kelly to rezone 13,000 square feet behind WMMK from Residential Urban Single to Business Retail ahead of a May 16 Planning Commission hearing. Neighbors warn spot zoning could lower nearby property values while Kelly argues the three-fourths surrounding area would keep the site in harmony with existing businesses. Local officials note the BR district is restrictive and anticipate a heated debate.
