Eglin Eyed Gulf Drilling Near Destin Dome Leases

Eglin Air Force Base officials say Gulf of Mexico Destin Dome leases near Destin could be among the first explored by oil firms. Howard Dimmig notes a Shell Amoco tract of about 50.6 million acres will be developed on a first come first serve basis with exploration restricted to one 30 mile square area at a time to protect life, the environment, and Eglin missions. If a gas find occurs, wells may be capped and placed in reserve or equipped with underwater pumps to minimize rig presence.
