City officials schedule 5 30 p m Thursday workshop at Destin City Hall to discuss a sign ordinance. Some commissioners push tighter sign limits while billboards seek to raise size cap from 250 to 378 square feet.
Destin residents must display a mailed three month sticker on or near their trash cans to qualify for curbside collection. Only those who have paid for pickup receive the stickers, which will be issued quarterly.
A survey of 167 residents shows support for starting a Destin YMCA with 114 respondents indicating potential membership. A Thursday 7 p.m. meeting at the Destin Community Center invites residents to join the YMCA organizing committee, which will recommend next steps to the city council.
City Council votes 5 to 2 to pursue state funds for an Old Pass Lagoon flushing pipeline estimated at 2.1 million dollars with a 10 thousand dollar annual operating cap. Dewey Destin opposes spending and doubts the plan while, with Jimmy Vaughn, he criticizes increased ad valorem taxes for harbor cleanup. Okaloosa County school board tightens rules to ban student possession or use of any tobacco products on campus including smokeless tobacco. First offense carries up to three days suspensions, rising to ten days by third offense, with fourth offense prompting referral to the school board. District observers note smokers form groups and penalties aim to curb health and carpet damage costs.
Destin finances are sound but an audit by Creel Bryan and Gallagher found 13 bookkeeping improvements. J Steve Jay urged formal overtime and leave policies, enumerated purchases forms, and regular insurance checks. Nine new recommendations were added for constructive critique.
