Coast Panel Funding Slashed From $1 Million to $50,000
Nancy Linnan of the Department of Community Affairs said the 1984 Legislature reduced an initial $1 million request for local governments to assist regional planning groups to a $50,000 allocation. Funds will be split between Key West, an Area of Critical State Concern, and the Northwest Florida Coast Resource Planning and Management Committee. The panel had sought $50,000 for a South Walton County transportation study, with hopes for an extra $25,000 from other sources.

LeBel Family Mourns Sailor Son Lost In Bermuda Race
Tom LeBel, 15, formerly of Destin and now in Providence, died when the three masted bark Marques sank during a Bermuda to Halifax cruise. Eighteen aboard were missing after a freak squall drove the ship under in the pre-dawn hours. His father Hardy LeBel Sr. recalled Tom’s passion for tall ships and his dream to race at sea, as survivors described the rapid capsize and swift disappearance.
