Gulf coast weirs fail to dredge East Pass cost millions

Coastal engineer Weggel criticizes the Gulf weir jetty system for East Pass Ponce Inlet and Perdido Pass as costly failures. Corps data show annual dredging costs from 1980 to 1984 averaging six figures, with 1982 dredging at $926,000. He notes lack of data on wave action and warns that without funding for design research, projects are built on the best available information.
