After a brutal eight days the Destin Log crew published three editions plus Fort Walton and Twin Cities Logs and several other papers. Gene Sinsko led about 100 hours per man as equipment failed and lights stayed on to finish amid a near stormless Fourth of July. The narrator laments fireworks cuts, hopes for city funding, reflects on a Gulfport sailing trip with gear issues, and notes the America's Cup races near Perth in late 1986 and early 1987 with U.S. challengers planning trips Down Under and yachting tour packages available through Yachting magazine.
A reader comments on DOT work at the Highway 98 Santa Rosa Blvd intersection in Okaloosa County. Old lanes were covered with asphalt and left turns banned on this stretch. Despite signs, drivers with Okaloosa tags still turn left, suggesting signage may be misunderstood or need dialect clarification.
In a local column, Mike Mitchell discusses traffic safety and signage inconsistencies at a troublesome intersection. He criticizes Okaloosa Gas for independent operation, recounting a constituent complaint about yard damage and lack of corrective action. He urges better accountability among area utilities and ends with a national reflection.
Editorial urges local and regional leaders to craft an area wide traffic plan as crowds flood highways and beach routes. MPO reports show no near term fixes due to state funding shortfalls and DOT forecast errors. County leaders resist a local gas tax without a referendum, leaving a fixes delay while tourism spikes.
A letter from Don Spinella warns that beach driving endangers children and urges restricting driving to emergency use. Santa Rosa Beach residents thank Phil Gibson for organizing the Clean up 30A Drive on June 30, aided by The Blue Mountain Grocery, with plans to extend cleanup efforts countywide.
The Destin Log asks readers to express opinions and disagreements on editorials by sending legible letters with signature and address. Letters should be addressed to Editor The Destin Log P O Box 957 1225 Airport Road Destin FL 32541.
