Holiday crowds split Fourth of July week in Destin area
Beach vacationers stagger the holiday week with pre and post Fourth stays. Hotels report strong bookings but many properties on Route 30A still list vacancies and last minute rentals rise. Beachfront units fill as families, conventions, and extended stays mix with scattered single weekend visitors.

DOT Permitted To Divert Runoff Into Destin Harbor
The Florida DOT won a discharge permit from the Department of Environmental Regulation on June 8 to divert runoff from the new Highway 98 into Old Pass Lagoon. Key requirements include a sediment pond near Destin Country Store, swales along the first 1,800 feet of municipal roadway, a pumping station to move groundwater east to swales, and a 23 by 36 inch double baffle basin at the outfall. The project, designed with Northwest Florida Water Management District input, aims to trap sediments and prevent contamination of Choctawhatchee Bay while ensuring future developments provide their own drainage.
