Dealers See Tax As Fishy in Destin
A proposed 1984 Florida bill would tax seafood dealers on every pound of fish caught off the coast, drawing pushback from Destin merchants who say the levy is unfair and would raise consumer prices. Rep. Pete Dunbar predicts $1 million to $3 million yearly, with half to the Marine Fisheries Commission, though dealers doubt the split.

Harbor Moratorium Sparks Dispute Over DNR Permit Ban
Okaloosa County Commissioner Mike Mitchell criticized a proposed moratorium on multi slip docking permits in Old Pass Lagoon. He said the state is taking the easy way out and that the county lacks environmental review expertise to deny permits. Mitchell noted the lagoon has experienced water quality problems and fish kills, while DNR officials push for a cabinet decision on the moratorium at the March 6 meeting.
