Public Works director Dave Heinrich said an $826000 shortfall in Okaloosa County’s landfill budget will push back key efforts at Wright and Baker landfills. A PVC liner for 10 acres at Wright costs about 160000, a new disposal cell waits, and $250000 worth of Baker construction is postponed to next year. Revenue losses, including $487000 from federal revenue sharing and $339000 from lower landfill fees, caused the deferrals but not cancellations. The Niceville landfill closure, costing 200000 to 300000, aims to finish this year with three feet of soil cover and a PVC liner on nearly 12 acres.

Jet Stream and The Bullet: Tallest Gulf slides for Okaloosa Island
Water World of Okaloosa Island is adding two 77 foot tall fiberglass water slides, the Jet Stream and The Bullet, built by Big Country Water Slides of Calgary. The Jet Stream will reach speeds up to 45 mph with a 40 foot straight drop, while The Bullet features three humps and a 35 mph top speed. Construction wraps in seven weeks and the rides are slated to open in the second week of March under Seasports Center.
