The Destin Chamber of Commerce relocation committee narrowed 20 possible locations to six along U.S. 98. Best Western informed the chamber weeks ago that it will use the building housing the offices, forcing a move. No relocation date has been set.
The eleventh annual breakfast by the Destin Lions Club takes place today at Destin Elementary School on Beach Drive. Serving runs 7 a.m. to noon with sausage pancakes juice milk and coffee on the menu. Donations are $2 with profits aiding Lions charities and about half of annual funds used locally for civic and charitable purposes.
City Hall will open in the new Harbor District location at 100 U.S. 98 East on the south side of the highway once move plans proceed. City Manager Jack Dorman said departments stay open until relocation necessitates closure. council approved shifting from Mountain Drive to the riverside building overlooking the harbor.
The state denies the Destin Charter Boat Association a 5.1 acre East Pass tract lease, citing U.S. government ownership and possible Air Force control. Eglin Air Force Base and the DNR dispute ownership, complicating plans for 75 boat slips, parking, and recreation on the parcel. DCBA officials contest the ruling and reference a 1986 attorney general opinion.
Destin Chamber of Commerce directors divide over a proposed 1000 foot runway extension and ILS at Destin Airport. City Manager Jack Dorman argues the plan favors Fort Walton Beach and Mary Esther, not Destin, citing density and traffic concerns.
Okaloosa County Commission will determine if Destin Airport runway should be extended. The MPO learned that about 400000 in support funds was never secured. Extending from 5000 to 6000 feet would raise safety, but opponents near the airport fear impacts, while the project remains outside the county master plan.
Local businessmen hired a Tallahassee attorney to stall the U S 98 repaving project slated to begin Monday. They argue delaying to September protects lodging revenue and tax receipts, estimating a 10 percent drop in condo, hotel, and motel rentals if March paving proceeds. If not delayed costs could hit tourism.
Fire officials test Bio-Solve on Tuesday at the Fort Walton Beach Fire Department with participation from the U S Coast Guard and other officials. Deputy Chief Steve Womble says it could be used on spills of flammable liquids and oil if effective.
