Florida graduate student Reynaldo Roque leads a Department of Transportation funded study to design region specific road surfaces using a computer program that models stresses from temperature changes and traffic. The work tests asphalt mixes on a lab road to reduce future major pothole repairs nationwide.

Coast Guard Responds to 85-Foot Vessel Fire in Santa Rosa Sound
An 85-foot motor vessel radioed the station at 2 50 a.m. reporting an engine room fire. Operated by Cecil Evans of Mary Esther and owned by Midland Enterprises of Ohio, the vessel was pushing four hopper barges at day beacon 78. By arrival the fire was out and the ship had been moved to safe mooring. Gas in the engine turbines caused the blaze.
