Eglin Hospital Strains To Meet Growing Retiree Demand

Col. John C. Willis, commander of the hospital, said Eglin Regional is straining a limited staff to keep pace with rapidly growing retiree numbers. He noted improvements including an evening clinic open to 9 p.m. and a faster phone system, while warning that understaffed clinics hinder care. He called for five OB-GYN doctors and five or six orthopedic surgeons to meet community needs and discussed CHAMPUS reform and potential Medicare effects, stressing uncertainty in Washington.

Coast Guard to boost drug interdiction and joint operations

Commander Martin Dobrin of Emerald Coast says a task force will augment ongoing intelligence work and maintain federal state and local joint efforts to stem drug traffic. He notes three core duties: search and rescue, law enforcement, and maritime safety, with emphasis on humanitarian goals. The unit, 32 personnel with four vessels, regained full funding in October after budget strain, and officials expect continued enforcement despite limited concrete evidence of smuggling.
