The Destin Rotary Club will hold its annual tree giveaway at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Destin Post Office on Main Street. It has purchased 1,000 red cedar and 1,000 dogwood seedlings from the Florida Forestry Service. Two of each type will be given to anyone who wants to plant them. Seedlings require a well prepared planting hole with moss and compost and regular watering.
City councilman Richard Duke proposed returning the $1,000 donation from the Beach Merchants Association tied to legal expenses for the March 26 Old 98 hearing. He argued donations reflect badly on the city, while Councilman Dewey Destin noted the council had voted to keep the road open before accepting the funds. Duke will review the minutes to confirm.
Destin City Council trimmed sign sizes for permits, limiting on premise ads to 250 square feet per streetfront or waterfront and off premise signs to 128 square feet. Copies of the ordinance are available at City Hall.
Authorities seized a 45-foot sailboat loaded with nearly 5,000 pounds of Jamaican marijuana in Destin Harbor. Two men, Daniel Hamm and Michael Suder, were arrested after U S Customs and other agencies boarded the vessel. The ship, registered in the Cayman Islands, was found in a Holiday Isle canal at dawn during a three week investigation. Destin authorities said the raid targeted a planned drop point and that more arrests may follow.
Police report a large morning drug operation on Norreigo and Osceola Drives. Coast Guard units seized a sailboat named Sun Time docked at 522 Norreigo and detained two individuals after unloading approximately 5 000 pounds of marijuana.
Destin Councilman Lloyd Taylor proposes a resolution to widen the mouth of Old Pass Lagoon and cut back Holiday Isle to improve harbor flushing. He favors riprap along the new shoreline to curb erosion and cites cost savings and public input as reasons to study the approach over the pipeline plan, which lost support after a key easement offer withdrawal by the Hendersons.
Skyrocketing membership prompts American Legion Post 296 to seek a 2700 square foot back addition but residential zoning classifies the post as a non conforming use. The rule also blocks rebuilding after a disaster, threatening closure if a major event hits.
Okaloosa County commissioners backed a 5 cent gas tax in concept and now potential funding requires most of a 323 million dollar sum for 28 years to support roads bridges and airport projects through 2015. Public hearing set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Shalimar courthouse annex. Local option gas tax seen as leading funding contender by MPO staff.
