Alaqua Vineyards Win Awards in Florida's Eastern Competition
Alaqua Vineyards in Freeport earned multiple medals and quality wine awards at the Eastern International Wine Competition. Vintners Rebecca and Foster Burgess entered seven wines and, from a nine acre operation, produced 71 tons of grapes enough for over 32 000 bottles. They use Welder Carlos and Noble grapes to make ten varieties and sell about 90 percent directly from the vineyard. The Burgesses, married fifty years, emphasize fruity wines and say their Florida wines surprise skeptics with strong local demand.
