Steel Shot: A Second Chance For Waterfowl In Florida
Florida hunters shift to nonlead steel shot for waterfowl, with gizzard analyses showing rising steel shot presence. In 1981-82, 16.5 percent of gizzards contained shot and 21 percent of those had steel, prompting partial lead shot ban in 1977 and full prohibition in problem areas this fall. Regions requiring steel include Brevard east of I-95, Broward, Dade, Osceola, Leon, Lake Miccosukee, Lake Lochloosa, Orange Lake, and Lake Okeechobee, plus open national wildlife refuges.
