Tax on Alcoholic Beverages Spurs Lawsuit and Price Hikes
A Florida inventory tax on liquor beer and wine set to take effect Sept 1 has triggered a class action by the Florida Restaurant Association against the state DBR Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Lopacco. Owners warn prices will rise to cover the tax with some drinks inching up by about 1.50 to 1.75 per bottle. Local operators say retroactive taxation will boost consumer costs and strain labor weekend demand. The tax funds a 233 million education program approved by the Legislature July 12.
