Walton County lowers millage after state reassessment

State ordered reassessment raises the county tax base by 19.3 million to 488,237,578 and prompts the county commission to set a tentative millage rate of 8.5628, down from 8.949, at an emergency meeting. The plan keeps the rate .03 mills higher than last year and avoids a proposed .41-mill increase. Nine candidates filed for South Walton fire tax district seats with a Sept. 20 referendum and seven fire district commissioner seats, two per precinct plus one at large, on the ballot.
