By press time, Nancy, Nicole, and I plan a week on Sanibel Island near Fort Myers for shelling and beachcombing. We recall 1960s summers, the Gulf-front motel, and a balcony view of the Gulf of Mexico, though times have changed with sliding doors and rebuilt shores. The island shows progress since 1965, no ferry, no Bailey's Store, no mail dock, yet the lighthouse remains as a symbol of continuity despite a paved road and new development along the bay.
The passage reflects on life on a seaside island noting missing gatherings at Scotty's, potlucks, and talks at the Community House, while cherishing sunrise beach walks, shell collecting, and the seasonal sea. A historical account outlines the Destin Library origins and the creation of the community center led by Fred and Donalda Zerbe. It details 1940 milestones, library board actions, initial building plans, and a donated lot, highlighting the Zerbes’ pivotal role in Destin’s civic development.
