May Day rescue at sea saves Destin crew from sinking Bandit

Four men aboard the Bandit were rescued 60 miles south of East Pass after the generator flooded and water filled the engine room. The 126-foot Ocean Star heard the mayday and, with help from Courageous, Coast Guard Destin, and Cutter Pointe Verde, guided a dramatic lifeline as the Bandit sank. All four men were plucked from the Gulf and reported safe.

Corps hires Tampa dredge for East Pass

The U S Army Corps of Engineers selected Hendry Corp of Tampa to dredge the East Pass entrance and Old Pass Lagoon, with a 384025 dollar bid and 60 days to complete after notice to proceed. The plan calls for a 22 foot depth in a natural southwest channel, a shift from past methods, to be reviewed in a pre work conference later.

Coastline Excluded From Oil Drilling Buffer Zone

Florida officials clash over a proposed 50 mile offshore oil drilling buffer. Rep. Earl Hutto aides say the Panhandle coastline would not be included and question the measure’s necessity while state analysts temper expectations and consider a smaller 25 mile alternative.
