News and Views on King Mackerel Quotas and Rules
Helen Wren reports mixed news on King Mackerel rules in federal waters set to take effect in September. The Gulf and South Atlantic Councils approve an amendment allowing charter and head boats to choose two Kings per person per day with crew or three per person per day without crew, while private vessels face a two fish per person limit. The Gulf total cap drops 22 percent to 14.225 million pounds, with commercial and recreational shares adjusted. permit fishing rules restrict commercial permits to vessels earning at least 10 percent of income from fishing, and charter boats may sell catch when the commercial quota opens. The new state rule for two Kings per person per day in state waters applies to all anglers.
