Loon die-offs prompt concern across regions
Lange voices alarm as birds die across the Midwest and Canada. Wildlife Service spokesman Craig Rieben notes lab results may take six to eight weeks. He recalls loon deaths in the early 1970s but not at this level. The Common Loon measures 28 to 34 inches with a 54 to 58 inch wingspan and can dive 180 feet for 30 to 45 seconds. On Gulf beaches loons molt into a blue green coat before heading north.
