Local notes show widespread activity with visits from Monticello and Pine Bluff, contractor work on the Kinpel residence, a new Buick car for Dermott business leader, and church events including a Halloween party. Boosters from Monticello promote the Southeast Arkansas Fair as town life centers on markets, schools, and public notices.
At a union service the Methodist Church decided to hold a Sunday School Institute on the 26th 27th and 28th of this month. H F E Lufkin general secretary of the Arkansas Sunday School Association will conduct with one or two helpers from Little Rock. Neighboring towns will send delegates and be entertained free by Dermott hosts.
The Stancill Hotel welcomed guests on Thursday October 1 with a four course six oclock dinner for about forty attendees. Mr and Mrs Stancill led the hosting with W D Trotter and Dr E Baker among the directors assisting. Several commercial friends traveled from across the state to visit the new establishment over the weekend.
A Friday Oct 9 recital at the Dermott High School auditorium features Miss Iane Farrar Rev J Abner Sage Jr and the Dermott Orchestra with Miss Leons Raybourne and Mrs G E Kinney as accompanists. Proceeds fund Methodist Church conference assessments with 25 cent admission and 15 cents for public school students.
Last Sunday in the church year featured Rally Day and Promotion Day in Sunday School. Attendance reached 120 plus visitors, with a collection of 3.75 dollars. Many scholars were promoted and several new enrollees joined. Superintendent L. F. Etter spoke at service end after being re elected for the coming Conference year.
The Dermott community witnessed unity as Methodist, Baptist and other congregations joined a Sunday service to pray for peace. Pastor Fowke of Hamburg preached after a wreck delayed his arrival, with a notable lecture by Mr. Willard of India and Presbyterians visiting for evening worship.
The Dermott Board of Trade holds its annual meeting and officer election tonight. Drainage issues will be discussed. all local businesspeople are urged to attend. Secretary directs attendance.
Directors deny circulating letters by Jackson and Reed claiming favors to bidders. They state bids were opened fairly and contracts awarded at the best price. Records and bids are public for review by any taxpayer concerned about drainage taxes.
