Community notices list cake and pie sale at The Novelty by the Christian Endeavor Society. Twin housing for rent. Merchandise from Belser Dishough Co. includes fruit produce bacon and seeds. Local officials report bank actions, tax services, and street lighting resumes after outages. The Medical Advisory Board meets to review disability exemptions for wartime draft.
Through E. G. Ham mock efforts arrangements have been made with Internal Revenue Collector Jack Walker of Little Rock for a deputy to be in Dermott from February 25 to February 28 to assist residents in preparing income returns. This will be a great accommodation to the people of Dermott who can attend without a trip to the county seat.
After weeks of cold and snow, spring arrives boldly in the Sunny South. Children fly kites and play marbles while adults garden and relax on porches. Sunday afternoon a reunion drew about thirty White boys to the old Bayou Bartholomew swimming hole for a thawed plunge. Marshal Parrish orders street cleaning as trees bud and fruit becomes obtainable again.
A Dermott candidate for City Marshal states he is qualified and will follow council and mayoral instructions. He denies rumors of unkind remarks about lady voters and affirms support for women’s suffrage while asking for voters’ favor. The letter is signed by Jim John.
The city primary slated for Tuesday February 14 marks Der Mott’s first election allowing women to participate. Incumbents Mayor J A Bennett A Prothro J C Hoff man are unopposed for re election. G A Franklin also has no opposition for treasurer.
Mrs. W. G. Street and Mrs. Burnside of Lake Villajre helped train volunteers who will register the town’s women next week during national registration week. The aim is to provide women with service options for the country, identify those available for outside the home, and list those seeking training to improve service.
Postmaster Leeper reports an inspector will visit Dermott to assess eligibility for free city delivery. Required town provisions include sidewalks street signs house numbers and residential mail boxes, with only a few signs and boxes missing.
The City Central Committee appoints judges for the city primary next Tuesday February 1 in Ward No 1 Douglass H Blount and C M Measel Ward No 2 R F Clarke Wood Raborn and C E B Singleton Ward No 8 R E B Gillham W A Porter and W S Jennings Each ward judges will appoint two clerks to assist them.
The Knitting Club will send another box of garments to headquarters between February 25 and March 1. Members are urged to finish pieces and contribute to a larger shipment if possible. Mrs. Harvey Parnell, Chair.
Masons within the jurisdiction are requested to attend the next regular lodge meeting night on Tuesday February 19 by order of the Grand Master.
E P Remley as manager of the Dermott Smileage Book Campaign reports $104 raised this week, surpassing the $100 quota. A Washington letter to the local committee praises Dermott's patriotism and enthusiasm, noting it inspires Military Entertainment Council members and may guide other cities to support soldiers’ wholesome amusement.
