A stagecoach near Napa Cab was halted by a masked highwayman who forced passengers to dismount and surrender cash and valuables. About $75 in cash plus watches chains and trinkets were taken while the Wells Fargo box was ignored and mail bags left intact.
A lamp explosion sparked a blaze on Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn destroying three tenements. Mrs Catherine Kennedy died trapped on the top floor and several others were hurt as forty families were rendered homeless. Loss put at 75000. Gunboat Paragua reports sharp action at Bolenag with no casualties and the capture of a Filipino schooner.
Abraham Dahrouge a Syrian in Cincinnati claims he knows of a plot to kill the Sultan of Turkey. He says conspirators have been in Cincinnati and Indianapolis and he is studying high explosives for the plan. Dahrouge refuses to name the conspirators.
Berlin special reports Charles Allen an ex Sing Sing escapee and Sidney Winnie a Washington pirate arrested at Frankfort. Woman fatally burned as Melrose Cottage fire near Harlem River New York destroys six buildings leaving fifty homeless. Mrs Elsie Nagel confirmed dead.
In Panola County near Beckville, James Forsythe and Ollie Simpson wed without her father Andrew Simpson’s consent. Simpson shot Forsythe as he fled, killed Forsythe’s father King Forsythe, then killed himself after threatening his daughter.
In Columbus Ohio detective Abe Kleeman and Patrolman George Gaston pursued Charles Dumont an ex convict wanted for burglary. Dumont fatally wounded after a clash on Harrison Avenue as Gaston and Kleeman were shot and Dumont fell from his bicycle. Dumont aged 23 had recently been released from prison and was described as a desperate man.
Promoter George Lov ing of Fort Worth says his Livestock Combine project has met with success after talks with New York and Boston capitalists. He plans to form a company with at least 30 million dollars capital to include ranches and livestock across Texas New Mexico and Arizona with options from 35 additional ranch owners.
The steamer Cleveland is libeled for 5400 by eighteen second class passengers who traveled from St Michaels Alaska to Seattle. They allege they were hired to break up spare lumber and wood to obtain coal and suffered discomfort from poor sleeping conditions during the voyage between St Michaels and Dutch Harbor.
At Loganport Indiana the west bound Panhandle train No 41 struck a carriage near Grace Crossing killing four occupants: Mrs Narrison McVory and her two daughters aged 16 and 14 and her 12 year old son. Fire and mangled remains described. Engineers in charge were John Manes and conductor James Kinney.
The steamer Antarctic sailing from Helsingborg Sweden May 25 with Prof A G Nathorst on an Arctic search near Greenland was spoken off The Skaw at Jutland on return. She found no trace of the missing aeronaut Andree or any evidence of his fate.
Peter King murdered his parents in Fiskdale Massachusetts by crushing their skulls with a heavy instrument. The aged couple were killed in a drunken frenzy. He also attempted to kill his brother in the same attack.

Citizens learn that the appropriation for extending rural free delivery is exhausted and cannot be extended until Congress provides a new allowance. About $200,000 would be needed for a full extension, with $150,000 already allocated and $18,000 reserved for emergencies.
Walter Wellman, Wollman polar expedition leader, arrived in London August 28 after Franz Josef Land exploration and underwent the first operation to straighten his injured right leg. Surgeons report successful loosening of the sinews and expect to save the leg, with another operation needed before he can return to America.
The first authentic Tessie party disaster news reports six bodies found washed ashore near the Kuskokwim in June 1808. Dr Romig of Bethel’s mission brought items from the victims to St Michaels Alaska. The report notes fourteen lost their lives. Germany Has Made No Grab and cites no official notices of Brazil land acquisitions by Germany.
Will Steceed Sampson, Admiral Sampson will be relieved from command of the North Atlantic squadron shortly after the Dewey celebration in New York and will be succeeded in command Oct. 10 by Rear Admiral Norman Hi. Farquhar, commandant of the Norfolk Navy yard. Mother and Daughter Burn to Death in Cleveland fire tragedy. Beatrice Markalana and daughter Angelina die. husband Joseph Markalana badly injured when girl attempted to light stove with coal oil.
A Philadelphia plant belonging to Richardson and Ross Asphalt Block and Vile Works was destroyed by fire causing about 100000 dollars in losses. The blaze started from crude oil and asphalt boiling over. Fireman Albert B. Lewis was severely injured by a falling girder.
Mrs Jane Barber and her two sons Wiley and Leyi were killed by unknown robbers at a cross roads store in Otnstoke County Texas. A sack containing 100 dollars in silver was secured by the assailants.
Two men died and two were injured when a Pittsburg Virginia and Charleston Railroad collision occurred near Baird station Pa between the pay train and a freight train. An orders misunderstanding caused the accident.
A cyclone toppled terrorized Bermuda causing a panic at a synagogue where a lamp fell. Thirty two people died in the crush. many women and children were among the victims and several were injured as homes and trees were destroyed.

The sea drove them seaward on a shelving beach. Griggs fought heavy swells, brought each ashore, then performed resuscitation alone after the rescue.
Toronto industrial show officials report a dozen valuable dairy cows died early in the week. Initial findings attribute deaths to lung apoplexy after milk was allegedly pumped into udders to inflate them. Prizes for the affected cows were canceled by directors.
Two Cincinnati firemen Thomas Bland and Harry Helnsheimer died while rescuing a four year old child from a gas filled vault. The boy Monroe Dent also perished as the responders descended into the vault.

Cornelius Vanderbilt died Tuesday morning at his New York home after months of illness. He collapsed three hours after returning from Newport and died before 6 am. Present at his deathbed were Mrs. Vanderbilt and two children Reginald and Gladys, with Alfred away on a world tour. He was the son of William H. Vanderbilt and grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. He was born on Staten Island.
