A rear end collision on the Southern Railway near Georgetown Indiana left fifteen cars wrecked and burned an engine demolished three men seriously and one fatally injured and thousands of dollars in property destroyed. WAGES BATTLE WITH THUGS NEAR MADISON
Tourists in South Dakota near Madison were held up by a bold gang of highway robbers as they traveled to Lake Herman. The attackers robbed occupants of ore carriages including several prominent business men, taking about $500 in cash watches and all jewelry. Walter H. Johnson of Minneapolis, once a private in Company F, First Minnesota National Guard, and later a corporal and lieutenant of volunteers in the Philippines, earned a regular army commission after two deformed toes were surgically removed to pass a physical. Army surgeons initially rejected him for the deformity, asking if eight toes were better than ten, then accepted him once the wounds healed and he reappeared. He now bears the epaulets of Uncle Sam.
