Four Die in New York Fires and Manila Battle Report

Four people die in New York City fires and a fifth is fatally injured in a hospital. A lodging house blaze on South Street kills John Curran and injures Fireman Mullin who dies, while Fireman Fitzpatrick dies from hose truck overturn injuries. An explosion at Joseph Stern & Co. fat and tallow works may bury two men. In Manila, a clash near Leambano leaves four Americans dead and sixteen wounded as reinforcements arrive. Also: American Ax and Tool Co buys 38 acres near Glassport for a $500,000 plant to employ 1,000. Labor War Brings Bloodshed On St. Louis Electric Line

A strike by St. Louis and Suburban Railway workers led to immediate hiring of replacements and normal service. Early next morning four armed men forced a motorman and conductor to abandon an eastbound owl car with revolvers. Four Hurt in Chicago Soap Plant Explosion

An explosion at the B. McGurry & Sons soap factory in Chicago nearly demolished the plant and injured four people. Two were taken to the county hospital in serious condition. The blast was caused by a large caldron of grease boiling over in the mixing room, sending timber and bricks flying across the area.

Police Officer Shot Dead in Chicago Station Slaying

O'Connell of Woodlawn police station killed on eighteenth street in Chicago while in citizen clothes. The revolver remained in his hand and a battered derby lay nearby as investigators probe the mystery.

A fire at the Steubenville Wall Paper Company in Steubenville Ohio caused a loss of 500000 rolls of wallpaper and machinery. The damage is estimated at 50000 and fully insured. In Nebraska retired educator Samuel De Witt Beals dies in Omaha at 74 after a long career beginning in 1871.

Mrs. Margaret Frost remains jailed in York Neb at investigation into her husband Chas Frost death. Druggists testified she sought arsenic and strychnine to poison rats. Letters from a traveling man surfaced, but Frost gave no sign of intending to kill him.

Copper Vein Found by Finlanders near White Sulphur Springs

Two Finnish men near Sixteen Mile Creek south of White Sulphur Springs Montana found a moss-covered boulder weighing about two tons that proved to be almost pure copper. The discovery has stirred great excitement as the first virgin copper found in Montana, and it has become a ren dezvous for sheep herders for ten to fifteen years.

Riot on a River Steamboat Ends in Death and Mayhem

A riot on the Mississippi steamboat Sidney at St Louis led to a fatal plunge and stabbing as "Bad Eye" the roustabout fought Charles Hogan. John Sikes was stabbed while trying to intervene. Hogan leapt overboard and drowned. The unrest mirrored other violent incidents including clashes of nonunion workers in Cleveland and a fatal fire in Gladwin Michigan. Police responded to multiple outbreaks of violence, including theft, arson, and a fatal shooting in Philadelphia.

Le Moyne Citizens Foil Postoffice Robbery Bid

A pair of would be burglars broke into a dry goods store and the Le Moyne post office. Citizens surrounded the premises and opened fire with shotguns. The robbers fled through a side door and were pursued on foot for about a mile before escaping.

Fire devastates Beaver Dam malleable iron works plant

A blaze at Beaver Dam Wisconsin destroyed the malleable iron works engine room and the plant, with losses above 100 000 dollars. The fire spread to the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul freight depot destroying five loaded cars worth about 40 000 dollars. Other nearby property suffered minor damage and the factory was insured for 37 500 dollars.
