Frank Kinner, living east of Richmond, was surprised by a grizzly bear that emerged from trees near Glen Miller park and grabbed him in a tree line. The bear licked his face, wrestled him briefly, and was freed when a passing buggy occupants helped. the animal had escaped from a city park pit and was returned after its wrestling lesson.
Abner Griffin of Seattle was arrested in Laporte on a charge of selling worthless stocks. Held on $1000 bond, he failed to post bail. W. W. Haas of Laporte filed the charge after buying $500 of Griffin's gold mine stock years earlier. About $12,000 in stock was sold to Laporte citizens. one dividend was paid. Griffin said he mined the ore but big smelters refused to handle it, preventing further dividends.
Lightning struck a tree near Wheals on July 2 instantly killing Richard Summers who sheltered beneath its branches. Thomas Salmon and two sons and Summers son were injured. Summers aged forty leaves a large family. In the same storm a nearby building was struck injuring Charles Troutman Mark Edwards and two others, with two occurring unconscious briefly.
Franklin college completed a $200,000 fundraising effort to claim the $50,000 Rockefeller grant. The July 1, 1923 deadline passed with the campaign about $65,000 short of the required total, leaving the gift in question.

Terre Haute July 23 Judge H Cox of the superior court issued a warrant for the arrest of Winfield Fox after Misa Eva Close won a 4300 breach of promise judgment. Fox, a high school teacher at Washington Indiana, faced bankruptcy proceedings and marriage to Miss Mapes of West Terre Haute. He admitted years of courting and kissing but denied promising marriage.

Crawfordsville- 157 measles cases with 7 deaths and 19 births in June. Sullivan- Burnham and Harmon paralysed. serious condition. Peru- Rev Rhinehart to celebrate 90th anniversary. Tipton- dog tax largely paid. delinquents warned. William Reed injured in wall collapse at Martindate building. Peru- Amboy congregation starts $10,000 church. Ladies Aid raises $1,000. Boonville- new trial denied in arson case against Guy Hart. Evansville- Dickmeyer estate to pay inheritance tax. heirs receive $2,000 each. Windfall- Chester Morford, 11, injured in incident.
