Acknowledged as one of the oldest servants of the United States, Sophia Helmes, a Black woman, worked at the Treasury Building and aided in recovering a stash of $180,000 after discovering a vaults error. Her husband died in war as his master’s body servant, and she supported two children afterward. Prominent Washington figures aided her employment.
A rainy Thanksgiving day saw a successful church dinner in the M. I. basement followed by evening hall entertainment. Mrs H J Hoover visited daughter Mrs Atina Moneyeuté in Chicago last week. Charles Norry and wife of Rochester spent Thanksgiving here. Rev Will Singer of Woodburn attended.
Catherine Kindig spent Thanksgiving with her daughter Emma Gerard in Frankfort Indiana. Elizabeth Murray died last Tuesday after a long illness at the burial dr. David Fouts of Royal Center visited his sister Samuel Salyers and husband over Sunday, with Salyers in very poor health. Eli Brubaker and wife spent Thanksgiving at Rochester returning home on Monday. Harvey Hawley of Peru is noted in the week’s snippets.
Mr and Mrs Vore visited Galveston to share Thanksgiving with family and relatives.
