Hillsboro Elementary will close this week after decades as a small two room and later one room school. Twelve children enrolled last Thursday and the vote to close passed with one dissent. Parents chose Denton for their children’s transfer as Ridgely or Denton options were offered.
Cpl. Gus Koste and Sheriff Wm. E. Andrew traveled to Lewisburg Pennsylvania on September 5 to seize John Johnson Jr wanted in Caroline County for breaking entering and larceny at Harry W Hubbard s Beer Tavern. He was returned on the 6th. An accident on Route 404 near Denton September 6 about 8 30 p m left a car top only with roughly 1000 in damage driven by Wm S Thompson of Denton. Another wreck on Route 16 near Williston September 6 at 7 10 p m left a car driven by Davidson R Turner of Preston sliding and overturning on its left side causing about 200 in damage. Both crashes were investigated by Cpl Koste and both drivers charged with speed greater than reasonable and proper and to be tried on September 17.
The Caroline County Older Youth Group showcased a 4-H themed float in the Timonium State Fair parade. Sandra Coulbourne wore white as the 4-H Spirit, with Anne Plummer Health James Sanders Head Jack Sanders Hands and Naomi Fuchs Heart. Ernie Fuchs drove the tractor. the float won a red award. Mr. R E Meeks Sr loaned a wagon and tractor for the display.
Caroline County 4 H Girls Council showcased a booth at the State 4 H Fair in Timonium Maryland The theme Raster Fixed With Master Mix drew visitors Sept 14 22 with notes of rain and fair weather The item lists dates and historical events surrounding the period and mentions Yom Kippur Succoth and earlier milestones including the Treaty of Peace with Morocco and Washingtons Farewell Address.
Thirteen of thirty one Caroline County 4 H exhibits at the Timonium State Fair earned ribbon awards. Names of winners appear with their items from biscuits to evening gown and 4 H uniform. Attending 4 H girls and parents from Greensboro Centreville Ridgely Queen Anne Preston and other towns listed.
Mrs Leon Maloney president led the Ladies Auxiliary of Denton Volunteer Fire Co at a regular meeting on August 30 with 6 members and 1 visitor. The group will serve the Chamber of Commerce on Sept 24 and plan a chicken and dumpling supper on Oct 4 at the fire hall starting 5 30. Mrs Paul Singer chairs with Mrs Howard Spencer as co chair. County Auxiliary meets in Denton Sept 21. Refreshments were served after adjournment by Mrs William Beers and Mrs Howard Spencer.
Caroline County farmers are advised by county agent I M Rogers to file a refund claim for federal gasoline tax paid on farm use from January 1 to June 30 1956. The deadline is September 30 1956. Farmers who have not filed should obtain Form 2240 and mail it to the District Director of Internal Revenue Baltimore Maryland, immediately. Required forms No 2240 can be requested from the County Agent's office in Denton by written telephone or office visit.
The Caroline County Republican Men's Club will convene at the Denton firehouse on Monday September 17 at 8 p.m. Guests include Senator John Marshall Butler and Congressman Edward T. Miller. The Caroline County Republican Women's Club is invited and open to attendees.
The Keystone Automobile Club urges motorists and parents to share safety duties as millions of students return to class. It stresses extra margin for children, responsible crossing habits, and continuing safety patrols to reduce school age accident toll with support for public and parochial schools.
Edenton Homemakers Club met at Mrs Wilbur Adams home on Monday Sept 10 at 8 pm with Mrs Henry Trice presiding Seven members attended The group began with the Lord's Prayer and songs Miss Aldine M Bullard county home demonstration agent spoke on Choosing Colors Becoming To You The club plans a sewing project starting with a blouse Miss Bullard offered assistance for the project
Unity Club will meet Wednesday afternoon September 19 at 2 o clock at the home of Mrs George Clendaniel. Assistants include Mrs M Lee Wyatt and Mrs Francis Yeoman. Topic Choosing Colors Becoming To You will be presented by clothing leaders Mrs Roy Adams Mrs D Ralph Horsey and Mrs Frank Ziegler Sr. The Nominating Committee will be elected with President Mrs Walter I Fountain presiding.
Veterans of World War I Barracks 101 met Sunday at the American Legion Home with speakers including National Auxiliary President Mrs Godfrey Weiss and Maryland leaders such as Martin Iverson and Oliver Kennyon. A covered dish supper followed. a joint installation for 1957 officers and a crab feast will occur, with George Wise Jr named the new commander.
Caroline County plans Maryland Land Week with events on the William Ingerman farm. Morning Land Judging by 4-H, FFA, and Boy Scouts begins at 10 and lunch is provided by Caroline Soil Conservation District Supervisors. Afternoon tours cover forestry conservation wildlife conservation and agricultural programs with speakers Norton and Nystrom. Public invited with refreshments.
The Maryland State Police seeks applicants for trooper positions. Requirements include high school completion or equivalent Armed Forces service, Maryland license, citizenship, and Maryland residency since 1956. Height 57 inches to 70 inches, ages 20 to 31. must be 21 to be appointed. Training six months at the academy. salary $2,950 yearly with benefits. Applications accepted until September 22 at the Commissioner of Personnel, 31 Light Street, Baltimore, with exams in Baltimore Cambridge and Hagerstown.
Denton Caroline High and Elementary School see higher rolls this year as elementary enrollment grows from 353 to 365 and high school enrollment increases from 376 to 390, per principal Frank Gerhardt.
William F Childs Jr longtime Maryland State Roads Commission chief engineer will retire October 1 at statutory retirement age. A Cornell graduate, he joined the commission 46 years ago and helped draft early concrete road specs. He led the 1945 Baltimore Metropolitan Transportation Study and shaped major road programs. He is known as Mr Maryland State Roads.
A new group the Talbot White Citizens Committee formed in Easton to oppose desegregation of county public schools. About 100 attended a meeting at Berry Warehouse as Thomas Moore was elected chairman and plans were announced to sign up members. The Maryland Petition Committee seeks to restore segregation by court order.
Ray C. Cole of Chestertown will lead the 1956 Peninsula Girl Scout Fund Drive across five Eastern Shore Maryland counties and two in Delaware starting October 1. The drive targets 16 327.82 dollars for staff, programs, and camping, with camping taking nearly half the budget. Cole has led Kent County drives and holds multiple local board roles as the campaign seeks added staff support amid growing Girl Scout membership. A separate Special Gifts effort runs through September under Dr. Daniel Z. Gibson of Washington College, Chester, with regular canvassing October 1 to 15.
Caroline County 4 H Jr Club members judged Dairy and Livestock classes at Timonium Fair on Sept 1. Livestock team placed seventh among 12 Maryland counties, Dairy team ninth among 16. Richard Edwards of Ridgely ranked eighth individually. Other Livestock members were Samuel Foy Denton Jimmy Lane Federalsburg and Bobby Sutton Ridgely. Dairy team members were Kenneth Wood Joe Edwards II Ridgely Alan Nagel and David Nagel Preston. Coaches were F M Rogers and Loyal C Roger. Over 300 attended the contestants banquet at the Administration Building, sponsored by the Maryland State Fair Board.
Mrs Judith Pheil University Foods and Nutrition Specialist will lead a Seafood Cookery training and demonstration for Homemakers. The event runs September 19 at 10 a m at Choptank Electric Cooperative. Food leaders from each club may attend with one other member. coffee tea and sandwiches to be provided.
Washington College Chestertown announces five faculty and staff appointments by President Dr Daniel Z Gibson. Dr Richard W Reichard of Allentown Pa becomes assistant professor of history after leading research and development for Blue Shield in New York City. He taught at Radcliffe and Harvard and spent three years at Stanford University. Nathan Smith of Chicago is listed as continuing in the staff roster.
