The thirty fifth annual Department of Maryland Convention of the American Legion Auxiliary met August 22 to 25 in the Emerson Hotel Baltimore. Events included color ceremonies, a memorial service, essay prize, Girls’ State leaders, and installation of new officers. Caroline Unit 29 members Mahala Allston Rachelle Roberts Anita Swecker Marie Jopp Louise B Mueller attended.

Caroline To Go All Out During Civil Defense Alert
John S. Legates, Director of Civil Defense, announces that Caro line County will go all out during National Civil Defense Week Sept 9 through 15. Clergy are asked to include Civil Defense in services September 9. Literature and posters will be distributed countywide and schools will run evacuation drills. A statewide air raid alert on September 13 will mark the week with radio instructions during the sirens. Alert at 1:45 pm, Take Cover at 2:00 pm.

Girl Scouts Special Gifts Campaign Underway
The Peninsula Girl Scout Council launches its Special Gifts Campaign led by Dr Daniel Z Gibson president of Washington College Chestertown. The drive runs through five Eastern Shore counties in Maryland and Kent and Sussex in Delaware seeking gifts from selected individuals until Sept 20 with regular solicitations starting Sept 21. The overall goal for Council use this year is 16327.82 dollars.

Hard Hats Rule Enforced By Eastern Shore Utility
J Stewart Flannery of Eastern Shore Public Service announces mandatory yellow hard hats for all employees exposed to head injury or live equipment. Engineers supervisors relay testers and others must wear hats from arrival to departure. Trucks will also be painted vivid yellow to boost visibility and prevent accidents.

Timonium Farm Queen crown goes to Janice Hancock
Janetice Hancock of Stockton Maryland Worcester County was chosen Farm Queen at Timonium State Fair to reign over the Maryland State Fair as hostess of Agricultural functions during the Diamond Jubilee Fair. She is a 4 H Club member organist and farm worker who drives tractors and makes clothes. The queen received 50 dollars a gold compact and a special dress. Her court includes Dorothy Roche Martha Wilkerson Loretta Coleman and Catherine Davis. The pageant attracted 1700 spectators with 23 local Farm Queens selected in county contests.
