James A. Conner entered the Army on November 20, 1942. After basic training in St. Petersburg Florida and a dental assistant course at Fitzsimmons General Hospital Denver Colorado, he was stationed in Romulus Michigan for over a year. Before service he worked for E I duPont de Nemours & Co in Seaford Delaware. He recently spent a ten day furlough with his wife and daughter at his parents home in Greensboro.

Be Careful When Burning Brush Says Forest Experts
September marks the fall forest fire season and District Forester J. T. Rothrock at Salisbury Maryland reminds landowners of Regulation 4 from the State Forests and Parks Commission. Debris and brush burning is allowed only between 4 p.m. and midnight EST during September through December with safety measures to prevent spread. Within 200 feet of woodland or inflammable material a 10 foot fire line must be made around the burn area unless snow is on the ground, and a water man plus help with tools must be on site until the last spark is extinguished. Landowners planning to burn this fall should consult John H. Cahall Esq for safety guidance.

War report from Brittany drives Sixth Armored 250 miles
A clipping from Stars and Stripes recounts the U S Sixth Armored Division under Major General Robert Grow racing 250 miles up the Brittany Peninsula from Lessay to near Brest in ten days July 28 to August 7 1944. The drive freed towns with help from liberated French resistance, took more than 5000 German troops prisoner, and earned numerous Silver and Bronze Stars. Lt Col Embry D Lagrew led a 500 man task force killing 220 Nazis and capturing 760 in five hours.

Scout Court of Honor Held Last Tuesday at Garland Lake
Denton Boy Scouts with Scout Master Axford Barrow and sponsor the Denton Rotary Club held a Court of Honor on Tuesday the 5th at Garland Lake. The event featured a picnic and swimming, with many guests including Caroline scouts from Henderson Ridgely Preston and Federalsburg, Denton Rotarians, visiting officials, and parents. Awards included 2nd class badges for James Cheezum, 1st class for Billy Reese Smith Charles Johnson and Roger Redden, merit badges for Norman M. Sutton Harry Smith Jr. Roger Redden Charles Johnson Billy Reese Smith Dale Palmer James O Knotts Jr. Star Scout awards to Tyndall Winston and Jesse Winston, Life Scout badge to John W Noble Jr., and Eagle Scout badge to James Owen Knotts Jr. A large Denton contingent and others qualified for Star Scout ranking pending Boards of Review. Mothers prepared supper for about 125 picnickers.

Overseas Pfc Raymond Schuyler Remains In England Two Years
Overseas private first class Raymond Schuyler has been in England for two years after serving two years at Camp Meade Maryland and since October 5 1940. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Samuel Schuyler of Denton Maryland and one of five brothers in the armed forces. His wife Louise Goswellen and their six year old son Raymond Eugene live at Chop Tank Maryland. Before induction Schuyler worked at Federalsburg.

Major Wise's World War II Service Highlights
Major James A. Wise, a Denton attorney and Maryland legal veteran, rose from local practice to National Guard leadership, served in Fort Meade and Fort Leavenworth, and joined the Inspec tor General's Department before going to England and participating in the Normandy invasion. His family moved between Denton and Baltimore during his induction and later returned to Denton as the school year began.

Denton Volunteer Fire Company answered a hurried call to the Phillip Packing cannery at New Bridge on Tuesday evening about 8 30 when the roof was ablaze believed to have caught from embers from the smoke stack On arrival flames had been subdued by emery personnel except for a small blaze at the higher roof portion Firemen dampened the dry roof with water and returned A damp blaze was also extinguished on Saturday evening on the river road.

Public Must Understand Cost Of Education Says School Official

Fatal shotgun death of Hobbs canner at home
Frederick N. Smith aged 52 was found dead from a shotgun wound in his Hobbs home garage by his daughter Sue after a shot was heard. Dr. Dawson O. George linked it to personal safety concerns and possible overwork. Smith, once partner in Hobbs Manufacturing, had desponded over labor for canning schedules. Survived by wife Elizabeth Billings, two daughters, four brothers, two sisters, and a half-brother. Funeral at his home in Hobbs with burial in Denton cemetery.
