Long Road From High School to a College Commencement
A memoir-like reminiscence contrasts two suitors, Fred Sumner and Johnny Ryerson, during high school and college days. The narrator recalls how Sumner’s social standing clashed with John Styerson’s integrity and practical wisdom, culminating in a late-seen act of devotion by John to his mother at commencement. The tale ends with the narrator choosing John, valuing character over social polish.
