Pieces of Paper Drive Government Paperwork Costs

A Hoover Commission report notes 9.8 billion pieces of paper produced or accumulated by the federal government annually. It estimates 485,000 clerical staff costing 2.8 billion dollars, 3 million filing cabinets needed, and up to 250,000 clerks handling classification and searching at 1.17 billion dollars. A Task Force was created to curb this paper volume, underscoring how small items add up in government waste.
