Excessive Speed Demonstrated In Student Driving Test
Farm Bureau safety director Mr Pontious told Denton High School students that excessive speed is the leading cause of auto accidents. In tests at Caroline High School a car equipped with three marker bullets showed stopping distances at 20 30 and 40 mph with participants noting reaction and braking distances. Records by Dick Maucere Betty Orme Mr Swecker and Trooper Cooper were read to the crowd.

Hartly Captures Mar Del Crown In Final Game Series
Hartly defeated Chestertown 10 to 4 at Dover Park to clinch the 1947 Mar-Del League title for the second straight year. Big Joe Vodvarka out pitched Coakley in a 6-4 win at Chestertown, then matched up again at Dover Park as Hartly swept the final series. Hartly's Lemans led with a triple and two singles, while Hummell and Baxter added key hits. The Sunday showcase pits Glasgow, the 1947 V League champions, against Hartly in a 2:30 p.m. game, drawing fans from both circuits. Attendance reached about 1,000.

Dr Mary Jones Fisher Dies A Widely Known Educator
Doctor Mary Jones Fisher a prominent educator and scientist in botany and biology died Thursday October 9 at Fairview Convalescent Hospital near Dover Delaware after illness dating from last November. Born October 26 1870 in Talbot county she taught across Maryland and California and Spain then earned a PhD at Cornell in 1923 becoming the first woman instructor in Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences. She worked with Biological Abstracts and later at the Herbarium and Academy of Natural Sciences Philadelphia retiring in 1942. Funeral services were held October 12 in Denton with pallbearers and relatives including niece Miss Eleanor Fisher Horsey and nephew Thomas C Horsey Jr. among friends from Philadelphia Swarthmore Towson and Baltimore.

Williston Lake hosted a Caroline County Boy Scout Camporee from October 3 to 5 with 30 to 40 scouts from Denton Federalsburg and Henderson troops. A Court of Honor awarded merit badges led by K Thomas Everngam and George A Clendaniel, with Billy Smith earning the Eagle badge and Layman Redden presiding. The event honored O E Roberts for promoting scouting and praised scoutmasters for leadership at the Williston site donated by U G Todd.

The American Cancer Society Maryland Division announces a free general cancer screening center in Denton in cooperation with the Maryland Health Department. The Denton Clinic opens Thursday October 16, 1947 at 2 PM in the State Department of Health quarters with Doctors Donald Woodruff and J Mason Knox III in charge.

Orthopedic Clinic Postponed in Caroline County
The Caroline County Health Department reports the Orthopedic Clinic, typically held on the fourth Thursday in October, will be postponed due to Dr. Robert Johnson’s appointment as Assistant Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He cannot continue clinic service. no replacement clinician is arranged yet. A new clinic date will be announced in a few weeks.
