1946 County Tag Day Receipts

Mar-Del Basketball League Opens December 5

The Mar Del Basketball League starts Thursday December 5 with games in Denton Middletown Harrington and Milford and continues Monday December 9 with Dover Smyrna Felton and Cecilton hosting. League officials plan a 28 game schedule with two weekly games and assignments by the League President. The board of directors led by Tom Wright Denton Art Gunning Milford Lewis Roushey Felton Frank O Neal Harrington Paul Martin Dover Ronald Grier Smyrna Robert George Middletown Kenneth Dickey Cecilton will meet to finalize opening plans as squads prepare to start.

Paul Bennington Burned in Greensboro Car Fire

Paul Bennington of Greensboro employed by Caroline Home and Auto Supply Co. suffered burns to his hands and arms when his automobile ignited on 6th Street near Lincoln on Monday evening. Firefighters arrived, extinguished the blaze, and the car was badly damaged.

Denton Regains Lead in Eastern Shore Soccer League

Denton Soccer Club again tops the Eastern Shore Soccer League standings after a 6 0 defeat of Centreville. Queen Anne downed St Michaels 3 2 in an upset while Kent Island drew 0 0 with Ridgely. Sudlersville beat Chestertown 3 0. schedule set for Sunday with Denton at Chestertown.

State Conference On Dairy Technique At College Park

National experts in dairy plant production and farm problem handling will speak at the 1916 dairy technology conference at the University of Maryland, December 3 to 5. Topics include milk quality controls, pasteurization methods, ice cream outlooks, and farm seed preservation for dairy cattle, with University and state officials and industry leaders among the speakers.

Button Factory Marks Tenth Anniversary in Denton

H T Schwanda of B Schwanda and Sons outlined import and export of sea shells and buttons at the Denton plant anniversary. The firm buys shells from Fiji New Caledonia Solomon Islands Malay Peninsula and Australia and black shell from Tahiti while mother of pearl shells rise in price. The company operates four other factories in New York and Connecticut and sells to garment makers and stores with shipments to foreign markets.

Fleeing Family Escapes as Denton Farm Home Burns

A fire at 3 15 am on the Denton Greensboro highway destroyed a large frame home owned by Mrs Louis Kibler. Anne Bradford awakened relatives including her mother George Kibler and Eugene Bradford. All escaped in nightwear with only a few belongings and clothing lost. Mrs Kibler treated for exposure. New loss estimated at 37000. The family plans to join her husband in Florida later winter.

Goldsborough Overrules Objections in Lewis Contempt Case

Federal Judge T Alan Goldsborough ordered John L Lewis to stand trial Wednesday on contempt charges tied to the soft coal strike after overruling UMW and leader objections that the court lacked jurisdiction. Hopkins argued the notice to withdraw the no contract order was legal, while government counsel urged no delay due to strike emergency. Lewis and union officials sat silent as the judge set the courtroom 10 am Wednesday and noted the case centers on a nationwide strike signal.

Farm Bureau Convenes in Baltimore This January

Ambitious plans are underway for the Farm Bureau Convention to be held at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore from January 7 to 10. Caroline and other Eastern Shore counties will send large delegations, as the Maryland Farm Bureau, with more than 12,000 farm family members, aims for record attendance and enthusiasm.

C Of C Plans Gala Lighting If Dim Qut Is Lifted

The Denton Chamber of Commerce approved a gala Christmas lighting program led by E Theodore Orme to brighten Denton streets and trees. A free Santa Claus movie and kiddies gift are planned for December 23 at the Denton Theatre, with prizes for best decorated homes if the coal strike ends in time.

Caroline Live Stock Show Set For April

Francis M. Rogers, Caroline county agent, says a live stock show will be held at the Caroline county Live Stock Market in April following the successful 4 H and FFA fat hog show and sale on November 11. County agents, agriculture teachers and parents are urged to involve their youth in proper and profitable hog and livestock practices as part of boosting Eastern Shore production. The committee includes M F M Rogers, Ural C Bee, and experts from the University of Maryland plus Morris Sneider and Max Chambers, publisher of the News & Farmer, who are planning the April show.
