Mail Christmas Packages Early To Insure Delivery

The Post Office urges early mailing to prevent a Christmas mail jam amid wartime strains. With 25,000 postal workers redirected to war effort and limited transport, parcels and letters must be mailed by set last dates for each region to ensure delivery by Christmas Day. It notes the New York area handles about 350,000 overseas parcels daily in late October and lists final mailing deadlines by state groups.

Caroline High School Scrap Drive Thanks Community

Caroline High School extends gratitude to all connected with the scrap drive. Credit goes to CHS boys who gave free hours to load trucks, volunteers who lent trucks, and those who searched attics and cellars for scrap metal to aid the country.

War time P T A meeting and school notes in Denton

The first term Denton P T A met with about 100 parents Tuesday. Dr Thomas G Pullen Maryland State Superintendent spoke on war efforts in schools and teacher shortages. Also covered were Thanksgiving reflections, Saturday school days, honor lists and class news across grades with notes on attendance and upcoming senior and junior activities.

Record War Bond Sales Is Goal Of Women At War Week

Washington in a national push led by Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt to make Women At War Week Nov 22 28 the largest War Bond drive since Pearl Harbor. Harriet Elliott and Mrs Henry Morgenthau Jr head the effort with local War Savings Committees planning parades pageants and booths while volunteers wear armbands.

Washington D C Women at War Week opens November 22 to showcase women’s role in financing the war through War Bonds and Stamps Six million women are on War Savings payroll plans with monthly deductions totaling 70 million dollars In 148 000 businesses payroll savings enrollments are active and 25 000 firms are converting at least ten percent of gross payrolls into bonds every payday Associate Field Director Engelsman notes women’s direct and indirect contributions to the record The Treasury aims to enroll 3 000 000 women workers by New Year advancing the payroll savings campaign.

October Fatalities Hit Three Year Low in Maryland

Maryland recorded 34 traffic deaths in October, a three year low, with 1 272 accidents and 606 injuries. Fatalities fell 39.3 percent from October 1941, while accidents and injuries dropped 34.8 and 38.3 percent respectively. Baltimore City had 12 deaths, a 7.7 percent drop. twelve counties had a fatality free month. The 1942 year to date totals show 379 deaths versus 491 in 1941. The Maryland Traffic Safety Commission urges a 35 mph Victory Speed and home-front conservation.

All State Departments In Capable Hands In War Time

Public hearings on the proposed State Budget for 1944 and 45, led by Governor Herbert R. O Conor, reassured taxpayers groups and lawmakers that state administration is in capable hands. Department heads explained budget requests and justified increases while the governor pledged to avoid new positions unless essential to the war effort. Willis R. Jones urged adding a psychiatrist and psychologist to classify prisoners, but wartime constraints limit new programs despite support for modern prison handling.
