Dial Installation Revives Memories in Washington Bank
Maurice Otterback, president of the Ana costia Bank in Washington, recalls early dial intercommunication as a 100-telephones switchboard connected only locally. He began as an operator in 1879 for the National Capital Telephone Company, predecessor of Chesapeake and Potomac, alongside Burnet Nevins Ben Steinmetz and the late BE Bawsel. Washington now has about 180000 telephones with global long distance links. Otterback can reach 32,100,000 telephones in 45 countries. After the early era, girls replaced the operators. Anna Prosper became Washington’s first woman chief operator and later married Otterback, succeeding Nevins in the operation.
