Hog cholera threat warned by animal health group
There is no way to forecast when hog cholera may strike and early signs are often misattributed to milder hog illnesses. The American Foundation for Animal Health notes the unpredictable nature of outbreaks and urges vigilance among farmers and veterinarians.
Hog cholera cycles threaten Ohio hog herds this year
The article notes hog cholera recurs in cycles about every ten to thirteen years since its first major sweep in Ohio a century ago. It warns that this year could see a flare due to delayed vaccination, market pressures, and labor shortages, with signs including pig deaths and reluctance to eat. Vaccination of all susceptible swine is urged as the safest defense.
