Urbie Green to Play for Caroline Cotillion in Denton

Urbie Green and his orchestra will perform at the Caroline Cotillion Club Christmas dance in Denton on Monday December 29 announces music chairman Hamilton Hallowell. Cotillion members urged to pay dues by December 10 to receive current membership cards. Green, famed trombonist who has played with Gene Krupa Benny Goodman and others, led the trombone chair for Goodman at the Waldorf Astoria Empire Room last year and featured in The Benny Goodman Story score.

Dentonia Theatre Hosts Thanksgiving Matinee with Santa Claus

The Dentonia Theatre and Chamber of Commerce present a combined Thanksgiving Matinee and Santa Claus Day on Friday November 28 at 2 PM. Free entertainment includes comedies cartoons and short subjects. Santa will greet children and parade to the firehouse where a free gift awaits each child.

County Bus Inspectors Report Excellent Vehicle Care

Caroline County conducted a bus inspection for all its school buses last week. Inspector Walter Jones of the Department of Motor Vehicles praised pupil care for bus upholstery and drivers for sound mechanical features. The next inspection is planned for March.

Seaford Choir Renames To Bass and Treble Voices

Seaford Symphonic Choir adopts new name Bass and Treble Voices to reflect changing times. Since 1946 under Webster Schmidt and later Julia Dike and Katherine Copple, the group has drawn members from the Eastern Shore and performed widely. Rehearsals are at Mt. Delay Rebreeding Dairy Cattle For 60-75 Days

University of Maryland extension dairyman J R Shabinger urges delaying rebreeding dairy cows to 60 or 75 days after freshening. Research shows 47 days needed to recover from calving stress and warns first 35 days after freshening raise disease risk. Breeding records track freshening dates and repeat breedings to maximize efficiency.

Farmers Vote on Corn Referendum in Caroline County

Caroline County corn growers vote on Tuesday November 25 on one of two 1959 and later corn programs. Voters choose between ending acreage allotments with price support under the 1958 act or keeping allotments with price support under the 1949 act. polling places are Denton ASC office and Caroline Supply Store Preston open 8 am to 6 pm.

The Maryland fall feeder pig sale at West Friendship drew 986 pigs averaging 36.61 dollars per hundredweight and 54 pounds each, totaling about 20000 dollars. Dr. James Ferguson notes growth in swine industry with graded pigs from A to rejects and previews next sale near Denton on November 24.

Farmers Urged To Return Livestock Survey Cards

The Maryland Delaware Crop Reporting Service says the annual Rural Carrier Livestock Survey is underway. About 13 000 cards were distributed in Maryland this year. The survey informs the Annual Livestock Inventory Report planned for early next year. Cash farm income from cattle calves hogs and milk exceeds 100 million dollars. poultry and eggs add 65 million. Farmers should answer questions on livestock and poultry and return the cards to the mail carrier or postmaster.

Ridgely Methodist Choir To Give 3 Programs

Ridgely Methodist Adult Choir will present their Christmas cantata The Music of Bethlehem on three Sundays in December. On Dec 7 they sing at Bethesda Methodist Preston at 7:30 p m with Rev John W Irwin. Dec 14 at Unity Washington Hurlock with Rev Edwin J Horney. Dec 21 at Ridgely home church at 7:30 p m led by director Mrs B J Spence. The 23-voice group features Mrs Kenneth Woodward soprano soloist Grayson Winstead bass soloist and Virgil Carter narrator. Last Christmas crowd stayed for the performance.

Final Greensboro micro midget season race at Choptank Speedway

The final race day drew a large crowd despite misty skies as Micro Midgets competed at Choptank Speedway in Greensboro. Bill Tribbitt led heat one, Buddy Spiering and Bill Roop won later heats, with Tribbitt victorious in the 20th lap of the feature after several rivals dropped out. Doris Lane won the Powder Puff Derby, while season plaques went to Marvel, Spiering, Miedl, Tribbitt, Blades, Lane, Walls, and Pluggs based on points.

Maryland Education Conference Planned for Fall 1958

Maryland plans a statewide conference on education in fall 1958 with about 400 participants to discuss curriculum goals funding and teacher education. An advisory committee and local groups will organize programs following a pattern from the 1955 White House Conference on Education. Local meetings will precede the state event after the first year. Mack Price Honored At American Legion Dinner

About 100 members and guests attended a gala Post 29 dinner at the Post Home. Mack Price received a Post Commander’s ring from Commander George Chapis, with raffled cakes raising funds for Christmas toys. A father son dinner and a family Christmas party were planned, inviting all eligible veterans to join and participate in upcoming events.

Federated Garden Clubs Meet In Baltimore

Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland gathered in Baltimore on November 11 at the Sheraton Belvedere. Members Mrs Wilmer Fell Davis and others from Federalsburg Denton Greensboro Easton attended. Georgia M Stewart presented a program on Japanese flower arrangements and T Hughlett Henry Jr planned the day’s activities. Davis, a student judge, arranged a tablescape. About 3900 women comprise 101 clubs in the state.
