The United States Government and the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experimental Stations recommend finely ground Limestone as the best soil lime. Sheldon recovers from fever as Joan, now in charge of the household, relishes a romance on a tropical frontier. He warns of cannibal dangers among his men while she debates romance and danger, joking about revolvers and adventure on a dangerous island.
In a vivid tale a Hawaiian woman Joan meets Sheldon aboard a ship and recounts a life of ranches in Hawaii, escape from Tabil, and a perilous struggle with robbers in Tahiti. She reveals she will seek new land and a soil plantation, possibly in the Solomons, after a bold claim of independence.
Sheldon encounters Joan Lackland, a quick minded American woman wrecked at Berande. Her fierce independence clashes with his conservatism as they navigate authority, danger from natives, and a growing partnership aboard a Solomons plantation. She reshapes the bungalow, directs labor, and asserts freedom amid tension.
At breakfast Joan and Shel don are awakened by a riot outside the Berande compound. The two brothers Carin Jama and Bellin Jama, known as the Silent and the Bragger, challenge white guards and vow to seize two black laborers, escalating a violent confrontation.
