Tawes’ Action Ticket Wins Maryland Governor Race
Millard Tawes swept to a second term as Maryland governor on the statewide Democratic ticket. Daniel B. Brewster became the first Maryland Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate since 1946. Republicans narrowed gains in the House delegation, with Rogers C. Morton defeating Thomas F. Johnson in the Eastern Shore district. Unofficial returns show Tawes defeating Frank Small Jr. in Baltimore City and surrounding counties, with small margins in multiple counties. The Democrats expanded their hold in the General Assembly and retained a 6-to-2 margin in Congress.
