Denton residents turnout reached nearly 500 voters for a two-candidate race between L A Moore and Walter B Palmer Jr The final tally 270 votes for Palmer Jr and 181 for Moore secures Palmer Jr the commissioner post to begin July 1 1959.
Advice from August G. Detlof of the Keystone Automobile Club urges motorists to prepare their cars, observe speed limits, and drive patiently this Memorial Day weekend to reduce holiday highway accidents. Early starts and cautious routes are recommended to enhance safety for all travelers.
State effort Keep Maryland Beautiful urges litter-free holidays. Practical tips include carrying a litterbag and leaving picnic spots cleaner. Weather outlook June 1 2 3 warm to changeable with rain later in the period. Notable dates include Civil War skirmish at Fairfax Court House in 1861 and other historical notes.
State Teachers College Salisbury announces baccalaureate services May 31 and commencement June 1 with Dr J Leas Green delivering the sermon and Dr Arthur A Hauck giving the commencement address. Music, processions, and diplomas will mark the ceremonies in the college auditorium.
Rev Paul E Uhrig has been appointed Director of Public Relations for Malone College Canton Ohio He is a 1935 Caroline High School graduate formerly pastor of The Little Country Church Alexandria VA He conducted weekly radio broadcasts and a TV program in the Washington area He has evangelistic travel across the United States pastored in Troy NC for 11 years and written for youth magazines He authored two youth books and has traveled abroad twice visiting the Holy Land and researching religion One year ago he visited the Soviet Union.
Memorial service and parade announced for Sunday May 31 at 2 p m on the Green in Denton by Wilson Irwin chairman of the Caroline County Veterans Organized Committee. The day includes a parade from Caroline High School to the Court House Green with ceremonies and a boat show afterward at the Boat Basin.
The Caroline County Garden Club won top awards at the Spring Flower Show of District I in Easton on May 21. Maryland Maytime featured notable entries from Talbot, Queen Anne’s, Green Fingers, Chestertown and Caroline clubs with the Tri-Color Award going to Mrs. Wilmer Fell Davis and the Award of Merit to Mrs. W Edwin Unger.
Ruth M. Chambers, manager office services at Choptank Electric Cooperative in Denton, was elected secretary of the Eastern Shore Chapter of the National Office Management Association. Other officers for the coming year include J R Dou Nick, president, R M Walston, vice president, and T Nelson treasurer, with committee chairs named for publication education attendance publicity membership hospitality and nominating. Sterling A White of Purina Delmar Plant spoke on the Personnel Policy ofRalston Purina, noting 35 years with the company in various roles.
Miss Alice Sherwood won the Miss Denton title at the local armory beating nine rivals in a Rotary Club pageant that drew about 500 people. Little Miss Denton went to Darlene Mae Lankford with runner ups Ruth Ann Brindley and Juanita Shaffer. The event served to raise funds for a Rotary scholarship with Miss Mary Jean Cole receiving the first scholarship grant and a $200 U S Savings Bond awarded to Miss Denton 1959.
Marcellyn Bennett, 17, a high school senior, won the Miss Greensboro title on May 19, beating nine other contestants. Junior Miss Greensboro was Sally Anne Pritchett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pritchett. Carole Ann Pippin was runner up in the senior contest with Mildred Smith in third.
Several hundred guests attended the annual Denton School of Art exhibit held Sunday in the Denton Teen Center. Patron opinion called it the best yet. Entries came from Easton Salisbury and Denton classes directed by Mrs. Nance Hall Asher. A feature showcased paintings by patients from the State Hospital at Cambridge, where Asher runs a 20 patient art class.
