Editorial notes on labor, politics and industry
A collection of opinion items discusses rising discontent from prosperity, strikes, and union clashes in New York and Omaha. It notes the Pennsylvania Railroad victory over Western Union over pole removal, Rhode Island political rot, and calls for reform in voting and public officials. It critiques Post Office Department practices and Payne’s racial politics, while praising Charles M Schwab’s Homestead school and Andrew Carnegie’s view of the smart set.

No Battle Today as Child Stops Blue and Gray
Down from the hill and up from the glen two mounted troops the Boys in Blue and Gray clashed in a sunlit moment. A child stood in the way with flowers and a yearning to see mama. The Blue captain halted, then rescued the baby and carried it home to its mother's cottage as cheers rose from both sides.
