Trial of prominent lawyer Keating opens in Cambridge

Four indictments accuse B Palmer Keating of Centreville of obtaining money under false pretences and embezzlement. The trial before Judges Page Holland and Lloyd drew a packed courtroom. The first case, tied to a mortgage assignment, was dismissed on demurrer. In the Comegys bond matter, the state contends Keating misrepresented a loan need. Comegys testified she invested $500. Keating produced notes and claimed satisfaction. Keating testified he credited Comegys for stock, denied soliciting $500, and said she signed an interest credit. The defense challenged Weedon’s wealth and stock holdings. The State presented witnesses, then Keating took the stand, denying misrepresentation. The proceedings continued with closing arguments by the State and defense counsel.
