Rotary Club of Denton Elects 1962 63 Officers

John W. Asher Jr was elected president of the Denton Rotary Club for 1962 63 term replacing K Thomas Everngain. Emory Dobson named vice president and program chair. Sam Johnson re elected secretary treasurer. Directors are Samuel Nowell J B Jarrell and Q R Walsh. Evergain becomes immediate past president. New officers take office in June. The text also salutes The American Legion on its 43rd anniversary noting its role in American life and thanking longtime members Earl A Stafford and Lewis T McNeal.

Weather and historical dates from early American calendar

A fragment lists March weather with forecast notes and a sequence of historical dates. It notes the University of Virginia opening in 1825, South Carolina adopting a constitution in 1776, J P Maynard’s plaster invention in 1848, Aristide Briand’s birth in 1862, Massachusetts naval militia in 1890, Alaska sale agreement in 1867, and Commodore Perry’s treaty in 1854. It also shows a brief temperature and rainfall table with dates from mid month.

Fashion Show at North Caroline High School March 29

The Woman's Club of Denton presents the annual Spring Promenade fashion show at the Cafetorium of North Caroline High School on Thursday March 29. Emanuel's of Dover will present outfits modeled by children teens and adults with prizes and door gifts for early arrivals and attendees. Tickets are $1.50, with prizes including a crystal necklace set and a Floral Mist gift.

St Gertrude’s Card Party Planned for May 9 1962

The planning committee for St. Gertrude’s annual card party met March 11 1962 naming Mrs John Podlesny chair and Mr Fred Parenteau co chair. The event proceeds aid the School for Exceptional Children run by Benedictine Sisters with prizes and various chairmanships assigned. An April meeting was planned to continue preparations.

Ridgely Brethren Church Spiritual Emphasis Week

Ridgely Church of the Brethren will hold Spiritual Emphasis Week from April 9 to 15. Rev. B Merle Crouse of Bridgewater Virginia and Quito Ecuador leads each evening. The Crouse family are on furlough from mission work in Ecuador and have recently been serving a Bridgewater pastorate. All are welcome.

Rotary Inter-City Meeting At Centreville

Rotarians from Centreville Ches ter town and Denton will hold a joint meeting Tuesday evening March 27 at the Centreville Methodist Hall. Dinner at 6 30 p m District Governor F Allan Holden will attend and encourage inter city meetings to foster acquaintance among nearby clubs. Speaker William D Rogers general counsel for the Alliance for Progress will discuss US relations with South American republics and Kennedy era programs. Born in Wilmington Delaware he was educated at St Andrews Princeton and Yale and has served as Ha waii deputy attorney general and a Puerto Rico Bootstrap adviser.

Caroline County 4-H Public Speaking Contest Held

The Caroline County 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held Thursday evening in Den ton. Twenty boys and girls participated. Beverly Towers of Chipmunk 4-H Club won the girls contest and Alan Garey of Upper Choptank 4-H Club won the boys contest. The district contest will be at Easton on April 26. Judges were Mrs. Henry Fisher and Mr. C. V. Layton.

Service News: Bilbrough Joins Atlantic Fleet Unit

John R. Bilbrough seaman apprentice USN son of Mr and Mrs John R Bilbrough of Denton serves with the Atlantic Fleet Airborne Electronics Training Unit in Norfolk Virginia. The unit trains personnel in electronics for fleet operations and maintenance assignments.

Pot Shot exercise off Southern California with 60 ships

Fred erick L Fearins of Denton serves as chief gunner's mate aboard USS Seninole participating in Exercise Pot Shot off the California coast March 12 to 23. The Navy drills involve 60 ships, aircraft, and elements of the First Marine Division and Third Marine Air Wing. Vice Admiral Nelson calls the exercise a rare chance to boost Pacific Fleet readiness through carrier strikes, ASW, amphibious landings, and varied operations.

Junior Chamber of Commerce Forms in Denton

Lawrence Horner is named president of the new Denton Chapter of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Officers include Hugh Bailey as VP internal affairs, Bobby Singer as VP external affairs, Jesse Hignutt secretary, Wayne Spicher treasurer, Hugh Gordy director-at-large, and J. O. Knotts state director. Charter members describe Jaycees as a path to leadership through public speaking, teamwork, and civic involvement for men aged 21 to 35, aiming to recruit at least 25 members by the first meeting.

Delvale Dairies Opens Denton Branch on March 17

Delvale Dairies Inc of Baltimore expands to the Eastern Shore with a new Denton distributing center to serve nine counties. The one story 10 000 sq ft facility includes 24 by 100 ft refrigerated storage, five 5 horsepower compressors cooling to 10 below, a maintenance shop and air conditioned offices. Four trucks, each 5 000 gallon capacity, will handle deliveries. Construction by Eley Construction Co started in December and the center began operation on March 17 with a first load of 124 320 items. The president Seth W Heartfield Sr and executive vice president Paul W Hammond emphasize modernization and growth as Delvale marks its 25th Baltimore anniversary and anticipates a 25th on the Shore.

Tawes Action Ticket to visit Caroline County next week

Governor J Millard Tawes and the Action Ticket will tour Eastern Shore Caroline County on Thursday March 29 with a bus caravan from Dover Bridge to Hillsboro. The event includes a Denton luncheon and invites Democratic primary candidates to join, led by county chairman Wayne Cawley Jr and featuring national and state office seekers.

Hall Succeeds Davis As Choptank Electric Head

Howard F. Hall, farmer near Berlin, elected president of Choptank Electric Cooperative at the March board meeting. He succeeds Olin S. Davis who died March 15. Hall已 long on the board since 1947 and vice president since 1955. Harry Keenan elected vice president, serving on the board since 1946 and representing the co op on the Maryland Farm Bureau board. Both aided early development of the co op in their rural areas.

State's Attorney Disposes Of Several Cases In Courts

On Monday March 19 Denton Magistrate Court convicted six defendants. Chas Gleaton and Mary Ramsey of Denton each faced assault fines, Rodney Cordrey of Denton fined for indecent exposure and motor vehicle offenses, Grant Alban Baynard of New York City fined for reckless driving and no license, Norman Clough of Greensboro fined for school bus violation, and Herman Wagner of Greensboro fined for hit and run with 30 days suspended and later jailed 26 days on default. On March 14 Caroline County Circuit Court docket had six cases set for April 1962 term origin from two Caroline County magistrate courts. two petty larceny and four motor vehicle cases.
