Stewart Wright Files For State's Attorney

W. A. Stewart Wright of Denton has filed his application to become State's Attorney for Caroline County. A recently discharged serviceman, Wright is the son of the late J. Frank Wright, a noted Denton banker and farmer, and grandson of the late William A. Stewart, a Denton merchant. Born in Tuckahoe Neck and educated in Caroline public schools, he studied at Washington and Lee University and earned a law degree from the University of Maryland. After admission to the Maryland Bar, he served nearly three years as an officer in the United States Naval Intelligence Service before returning to Denton to practice law with his wife and son.

Gregg Everngam Named Deputy OPA Law Enforcement Attorney

Washington resident Gregg Everngam, son of Kirwin F. Everngam of Concord and brother of attorney K. Thomas Everngam of Denton, has been appointed Deputy OPA Law Enforcement Attorney for the District of Columbia. A Navy lieutenant senior grade, he recently left service after three years as contracts and termination officer in the Baltimore Washington area. He studied at Johns Hopkins University and Washington College of Law and is admitted to Maryland and DC bars.

New Auto Law Work ing Out Well Elgin

Results from the new motor vehicle financial responsibility law in effect since January 1 are described as well up to expectations by Lee W. Elgin, Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Within March 1 to 14, 185 licenses were suspended in accidents with injuries or property damage over $50, with notices sent ten days prior.

County Farmers To Participate In Labor Saving Demonstration

Caroline county farmers will participate in the Eastern Shore Farm and Home Labor Saving Show at Pioneer Point Farms Horse Barn near Centreville on March 29 and 30. County Agent F M Rogers notes the event aims to help farmers save labor amid a serious 1946 labor picture and will feature homemade devices, such as conveyors, buck rakes, post hole diggers, and manure loaders, plus farm home exhibits and commercial labor saving equipment. Educational exhibits from the University of Maryland Extension Service and motion picture slides will accompany the demonstrations with local and other Eastern Shore farmers displaying devices. The show is chaired by Horace M Morgan of Queen Anne and coordinated with Ernest W Grubb, Assistant State Labor Supervisor.

Night Bay Ferry Service Starts May 1

Gov Herbert R O Conor announced a proposed night service for the Sandy Point to Matapeake ferry with first departure at 6 am and latest at 1 am. After 8 pm one boat would run a round trip every 1.5 hours with night trips from Sandy Point at 8 45 and from Matapeake at 9 30 11 and about 12 30 or 1 am. Inspections of the Dennis and Nice will delay immediate start, four days each if no defects found. a new ferry may join for peak July August travel.

Youth Temperance Council Banquet Planned

The Youth Temperance Council met March 14 with Mrs Mary Dorman hosting. Plans for a banquet March 28 at the Baptist Church were discussed. A guest speaker from the community will attend. Committee members were elected and refreshments served by Mrs Thelma Richardson.

Firemen Drive Exceeds Goal With Final $3040.50 Total

The Firemen's Annual Drive, closed days earlier, surpassed its $3,000 target with 679 contributors totaling $3040.50, averaging $4.47 each. Red Cross Drive Surpasses Quotas in Caroline County

Caroline County Chapter of the American Red Cross exceeded its $3,400 campaign goal, reporting $3,782.35 raised under Preston High School principal Fred Usilton. Communities exceeding targets include Federalsburg, Denton, Ridgely, Preston, and Greensboro, with others well along the path to glory road as theater collections start March 20.

Firemen Busy Responding to Multiple Alarms This Week

West Denton saw a roof fire at Eugene Layton’s home Saturday night while the ambulance was already in use. Chimney fires struck Andersontown at Annie Seeders and in town at Effie Good, with Rock Hill Poultry Farm near Bureau damaged by fire and water after a defective chimney. On Thursday crews fought a chimney blaze at the Beau champ farm near Williston.

Four Democratic Candidates File This Week

Four Democratic candidates filed this week with the Election Supervisors. The filings include W. A. Stewart Wright for State's Attorney, Luther W. Handy for Judge of the Orphans' Court, Mire Bryant for Senate, and Dorsey R. Nichols for Treasurer.

Donald C. Smith Dies In Germany

Donald Charles Smith, 20, of Denton, serving in the Army of Occupation, died in Germany. He was reared by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Smith near Denton and is survived by his wife Barbara Elinor Towers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Towers of Denton, who works for the Caroline County board of public welfare. He also is survived by a brother in service. No details on the death have been received.

Training Institute For Scouters At Easton High School

A series of Scouting courses will start March 26 at 7 30 p m in Easton High School led by M A Zimmerman and L Eldridge Lloyd Troop 187 Vienna and William Brohawn Troop 159 Cambridge. Courses run Tuesdays for six weeks with Cub Pack Organization in three weeks. Howard E Chaney Dorchester District will teach Troop Committee duties.
