Baltimore Officials Fight Abolition of Customs Posts

Baltimore and other federal customs officers urged the Senate Appropriations Committee to reject a Treasury Post Office bill that would abolish the offices of appraiser of merchandise comptroller of customs and surveyor of customs in various districts. Lawrence B Towers testified that the Baltimore district handles broad territory and processed about 40 million dollars in receipts and 175000 tons of goods last year. He warned abolition would disrupt practice and doubtless transfer authority to collectors, urging preservation of the comptroller’s independent role.
