Governor Herbert R. O'Conor sponsors a bill presented to the Legislature to keep the real property tax rate at 231-100 cents per hundred dollars. The measure aims to prevent future tax increases, reflecting the governor's stance against rising rates which could harm farms homes and business property.
Panjandrum chairman Harry B Christenat will host a two day event March 17 and 18 at the Wilmington Armory. About 1500 Del Mar Va Council Scouts will perform a continuous spectacle with 45 booths exhibits and demonstrations. A 45 piece Boy Scout Band will provide music along with nine acts scheduled at various times.
Greensboro beat Denton 4 to 1 last Sunday in a rain soaked game at the field. Denton led 1 1 at halftime as Harvey Fleetwood sent a shot that hit water and stopped but Greensboro surged ahead in the third quarter scoring twice before Dug Bennington limped out. Greensboro dominated the later stages with Fleetwood and Spence among the key players as Denton struggled with pep and passing on the slick surface. Referee Councell.
The American Store at Denton was robbed of about 160 pounds of meat valued at $30 early this week. Sheriff William E. Andrew is investigating. Two pasteboard cartons held 110 and 50 pounds of smoked ham shoulders frankfurters and bologna. The loss was found by U L Austin of Milford Delaware, Burris truck driver, who delivered perishables and found the scene at 7:30 am after deliveries. Town officer Thomas Bradley saw the delivery but noted no suspects.
A Bowman Commission supported plan advances in the Assembly creating a fourteen member Legislative Council. The body would coordinate and prep legislation, study rules, and hold hearings to improve efficiency beyond biennial sessions. It would include top leaders and committee chairs, with power to appoint committees and study executive operations. The report urges deeper, technical reviews for greater economy and efficiency.
Hobby Club and Forensic Society notes detail student projects in handicrafts insects stamps and photography under Ramsburg and Denndorff. Dramatic Club previews Mountain Mumps with cast lists and March 21 performance while Social Club tests etiquette and hosts a dance. Bank news explains thrift lessons and March 14 deposits reach 7.10 with rooms led by Ramsburg Tiice and Ruleigh.
A new permanent Delmarva Chamber of Commerce was organized at a Salisbury luncheon with representatives from fourteen towns. It aims to link 38 area chambers, promote transport and ferry improvements, and attract New York World's Fair visitors. L. Benjamin elected president. Dr. A. S. Williams, W. W. McCabe, and Harold A. Littleton named vice presidents for Maryland Delaware and Virginia respectively. Charles J. Truitt named secretary and Raleigh J. Hobbs treasurer. Monthly meetings planned. April board session announced.
Commissioners from nine Eastern Shore counties met in Annapolis to press the Senate Finance Committee for greater control over relief funds. They questioned state supervision of county roads, opposed higher schoolteacher salaries, and did not want a special primary in the First Congressional district. They noted a likely misprint in a bill that would let welfare boards dictate relief appropriations, and outlined four possible road supervision setups under amendments to a bill substituting county or state control as preferred.
