Educate the people and peace will follow
The author argues that Jeffersonian popular education could have ended slavery and prevented the Civil War. Over the past twenty-five years the sixteen Southern states have funded public schools, spending 250 million dollars of their own money, including 75 million for Black children, a pledge to future union and prosperity regardless of political party. The piece emphasizes education as the key to a wiser coming generation.
