The Denton Club plans to face Ft Miles Army team Sunday at 2 30. Manager expects arrangements to be finalized. several players were absent last week and may attend this time.
The Caroline County Farm Bureau picnic will be at Chambers Park Federalsburg on Tuesday July 4 starting 10 30 a m. A baby show at 2 00 p m features age classes for boys and girls born in 1942 44 and prizes 250 and 150 in War Savings Stamps. Events include swimming softball games horseshoes and more with State Farm Bureau speakers. Fire Company will run a soft drink concession and ice cream. a public address system is donated.
Hartly Marydel and Westville join in a War Loan Rally and street dance at Hartly Fire House on Wednesday July 5 at 8 30 p m. Guest of honor Col George J Schulz on leave from the Southwest Pacific. Mayor Wallace Woodford to speak. Music by the Blue Hen Ramblers and the Blue Bonnet girls. Community affair with game and Back the Attack.
James Robert Spence of Greensboro has been named editor in chief of the Diamondback at the University of Maryland, pending board approval. A sophomore in arts and sciences, he has served as news editor and managing editor and joined the staff in October 1942.
A letter from Dawson W. Fountain of the U S Navy to his parents says he is OK and has received birthday cards. His birthday is June 7. He last visited May 8 when he married Miss Sarah Roe of Baltimore. Emanuel Pritchett, known as Buddie, has begun boot training at Bainbridge Maryland.
Hawaii born W. Bennett Todd son of Mr and Mrs H Calvin Todd of Preston was inducted into the Navy Seabees on April 14 1943. He trained at Camp Peary Virginia then Camp Endicott Rhode Island for advanced instruction. In October he moved to Camp Parks Oakland California. His battalion left the United States in February and arrived in March.
The first letter from France to reach Denton friends since Invasion Day is Captain Charles V. Moore’s. dated June 13, 1944, he reassures his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. Virgil Moore that he and the Major are well in France. He notes censorship delays, asks not to worry, mentions tents under an apple tree, sunburn, and his longing for home and family delights like strawberries and turkey time. He promises to write often and send love to grandmother and Annie.
Sergeant (4th grade) Olas Edward Smith arrives at his parents home after twenty months in Greenland. He flew Atlantic air in less time than Maine train laps, has a 21 day furlough then reports to Camp Butner North Carolina. He wears good conduct and European theater service ribbons, Greenland attached patch, Utilities and Maintenance detachment. Drafted July 1 1942 inducted Camp Lee trained Fort Bragg Caroline High School graduate age 23.
Deaths notice for Mrs. C E Cannon details a long health decline ending June 19 at her Queen Anne home, age 72, married to Charles E Cannon, former Caroline county teacher. Survivors include husband two daughters five grandchildren and a grandson in the U S Army overseas. Funeral at Queen Anne residence, burial Greenmount Hillsboro. Also funeral details for Fred C Payne Federalsburg resident, heart attack, buried Hillcrest after Union Methodist rites. Burial Templeville for Mary A Ware 66, paralysis after two weeks illness. Services by local ministers.
John W. Pinkine, 21, son of Mr and Mrs John S Pinkine of Ridgely, a Ridgely High School graduate in 1941, enlisted in the Navy July 10, 1912. He trained at Newport and New York, served with Amphibious forces in Norfolk, and saw action in Taranto Napoli and Salerno while based in North Africa and Sicily. He earned RM2c in May and later moved to somewhere in the British Isles.

Sgt. Charles L. Jarrell Jr. of the 255th Infantry Regiment, 63rd Division, Camp Van Dorn, Miss, receives the Expert Infantryman Badge after completing weapon, firing, grenade, march, fitness, and combat courses. Home address Greensboro, Maryland. entered service Sept 1948. son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Jarrell Sr. Sister Pfc. Virginia Jarrell in the Marine Corps at Arlington, Virginia.
The State Guard will hold a 1944 encampment from June 23 to August 1 at Fort Meade under full military control. The program includes tactical training, schools, lectures, films, range practice, map reading, sanitation, domestic disturbance drills, night marches, bivouacs, and a governor reviewed parade. Denton Armory will host Monday evening preparations as the call to join goes out.
Conrad H. Liden, superintendent of the University of Maryland experiment station at Ridgely, resigns to enter the Army. Liden had taught vocational agriculture at Ridgely High School before his appointment following Albert White’s death. Ridgely Grange members present a furlough bay as a parting gift.
The annual meeting of the Caroline County Chapter American Red Cross will be at the Denton Community Club House on July 17 at p. m. A report will be read and officers elected. Anyone contributing $1.00 or more to the last War Fund Drive may vote and is urged to attend to hear what the Chapter did in the past year. Reports have appeared in county papers about quotas assigned and met.
At a special meeting of Caro line county Board of County Commissioners in Den ton, a new 1944 tax rate set: county tax 1.15, state tax 0.12, total 1.27 per 100. The rate cut arises from higher public utilities assessments and real and personal property gains, with reductions in education and bond interest. Bonded debt stands at 161,000 with 90,000 in school bonds maturing 5,000 yearly beginning March 145. The board declined 1,800 sanitation officer funding and granted 18,700 for welfare, including 2,400 admin, 525 needy blind, 1,575 dependent children, 3,000 public aid, and 11,200 old age assistance. A tornado struck Cambridge early Saturday, injuring about 35 people and flattening a block of 12 Negro homes. The scramble to treat the injured occurred at Cambridge Hospital as power failed, with emergency lighting by fire department and state police. Several buildings including F. B D Sinclair High School and two Phillips Packing Company warehouses were destroyed. cattle barns collapsed at Eastern Shore State Hospital and a gasoline station was flattened. Neighbors sheltered residents, Red Cross set up aid, and repairs began as crews assessed widespread damage and disrupted lines.
Caroline county leads Maryland in bond sales in the fifth war loan campaign with 61 percent of its 350,000 quota sold. Dulin's Preston district reached its $43,750 goal June 24, inspiring continued sales. Major contributors include B. Schwanda and Sons, Phillips Packing Co., and Eastern Shore Public Service. An army equipment display from Germany, Italy, Japan, and the U.S. will tour Denton Federalsburg Salisbury and other towns July 3–7, featuring rifles, machine guns, grenades, helmets, bayonets, shells, and related gear.
